A very different film

Posted : 17 years, 4 months ago on 18 December 2006 11:05 (A review of The Chumscrubber)

I was surfing through the millions of channels on my dish network the last night and saw this title. It sounded pretty weird and I thought I would give it a try. The movie has a great ensemble cast and has very stong acting. There are multiple storylines that all revolve around the suicide of a teenage boy. The adults and teens are equally screwed up in there own ways and get into some pretty funny situations. This is a dark comedy will leave you either laughing or shaking your head wondering what the hell you just watched. Worth a bowl of popcorn and a couple hours of your time.

good for cable

Posted : 17 years, 4 months ago on 18 December 2006 10:45 (A review of Freedomland)

I just watched this one on cable and would say that this was a good place to see it. Jackson is pretty good as usual and Julianne Moore plays her character pretty well. This was a murder mystery and the mystery part of it wasn't really all that strong. As the movie moves forward, you can tell pretty quickly where it is going. The only real twist is that it involves a white character in a black community and the conflicts that the situation causes. It was kind of like reliving the Rodney King story. I will say it was an OK movie to watch on a slow Saturday night.

Powerful

Posted : 17 years, 4 months ago on 18 December 2006 10:36 (A review of Apocalypto (2006))

When I watched this movie it reminded me a lot of Braveheart. The locations and shooting in this film are wonderful. I love the way Mel shoots his action scenes. The story in the movie is a pretty simple one that everyone can relate to, protect your family. As you watch the movie, you really want the main character to kick butt, win, and protect his family. I love watching this kind of movie when it is done well. Mel has made this movie really well and it was a lot of fun to watch. I will say that I know how to read and it doesn't bother me to see a movie in a foreign language and read subtitles. If this turns you off, I wouldn't recommend watching this movie. The movie also is very graphic. When someone gets attacked in a battle scene they really bleed. Mel doesn't like to hold back when it comes to seeing red. I will also say don't bring the family to see this one it is for adults. One of my students saw this with his parents and he made a comment on how "gross" the film was to him.
If you can stomach a lot of blood and read well, than you will probably enjoy watching Mel's latest effort.

Political movie

Posted : 17 years, 4 months ago on 18 December 2006 10:20 (A review of Blood Diamond)

Let me start by saying that the quality of the cinemaphotography and settings for the movie were superb. I really enjoyed the locations that were used in the movie, some of the scenery was spectacular. After saying that, I knew after about 20 minutes into the movie that I would be seeing end credits listing the facts and figures about conflict diamonds. Well I wasn't disappointed, right after the movie ended we got to see some closing statements about conflict diamonds and their effects on warfare. Well I got to admit the only thing I knew about the movie going into it was that it had a pretty cool looking trailor. I don't like reading too much into reviews because I don't like to read spoilers. I wish I would have looked into this movie more. I don't like being preached to when I watch movies like this one. I thought it was going to be a fun action movie (which it was), but I didn't want to get a lecture at the same time. I gave the movie a positive rating because it is a well made movie and the action really rocked. At the same time, I was a little turned off knowing that I was seeing someone's message about diamonds. Hell I can't afford to buy the things anyway so it didn't do much for me. I have mixed feelings about recommending to see this one. If you do go to watch it, go into to it knowing that you will be preached to along the way.

Great movie

Posted : 17 years, 5 months ago on 10 December 2006 08:43 (A review of Life is Beautiful)

This was a really heart warming movie. The first half of the movie is hilarious Roberto Benigni's antics. The love story is wonderful to watch. Then you get to the second half of the movie and get to see the stark realities of WW2. It is a stark contrast to the first part of the movie and shows how horribly families were torn apart during the war. A must see.

Lots of action

Posted : 17 years, 5 months ago on 2 December 2006 07:50 (A review of Dรฉjร  Vu)

This movie was a lot of fun to watch. There was lots of action and great cinemaphotography. This movie was an "A" ticket ride as far as action goes. Denzel, as always, does a great job of leading the way. He has a pretty strong supporting cast this time also. James Caviezel plays an evil character that you want to hate. One of the things that I really enjoyed was the way that we get to flow through a scene in one continuous shot. The scenes would flow through walls, windows, doorways, and rooms in what looked like one shot. In the movie Denzel joins Val Kilmer's crew in trying to solve a murder. The story builds with suspense as they get closer and closer to solving the case. As the climax nears, there are some twists and turns in the story that keep you wanting to find out what will come next. This movie probably won't get Denzel an Oscar nomination, but it will provide you with an action packed night of fun. I don't think you will leave this one wanting to get your money back.

OK for the family

Posted : 17 years, 5 months ago on 2 December 2006 06:54 (A review of Deck the Halls (2006))

This was a movie that the whole family could spend a couple of hours watching and get a few laughs along the way. Mathew Broderick and Danny Devito are the driving forces behind the movie. The competition to be King of Christmas drives the story and provides for the laughs along the way. Danny Devito lights up his house trying to get it to be visible from outer space and on his computer. He is the new kid on the block and is stealing the limelight from Mathew Broderick who is known as Mr. Christmas in this town. The story line is pretty lame but there are a few comedy bits that will get you laughing. My kids laughed a lot and really enjoyed the movie. If you want to find a movie with good clean humor, you might want to check out this movie. It isn't a Christmas classic, but it was good for a fun night out with the family.

This is a stinker

Posted : 17 years, 5 months ago on 23 November 2006 09:36 (A review of Tenacious D in The Pick of Destiny)

I have to admit I did laugh more than once while watching this movie, but most of the time it was because of how stupid it was. The basic idea in the movie is that Jack Black and Kyle Glass are trying to get this pick that will give them the power to be great musicians. The pick is supposed to come from the devil and hence has evil powers behind it. (Ever seen Crossroads) The word "f__k" is used over and over as a noun, verb, adjective...you get the idea. They do get stoned a few times and maybe that was what I was missing when I watched the movie because it really didn't do it for me. This is a movie that would be worth waiting until it makes it to cable. I wouldn't even rent this one.

Bond is back!

Posted : 17 years, 5 months ago on 18 November 2006 08:18 (A review of Casino Royale)

I've always loved watching the James Bond films. The fast paced action and beautiful woman are always a plus in these films. Casino Royale follows in the footsteps of its predecessors. The film has some fantastic action in the beginning of the film. Daniel Craig plays this 007 tough, serious, and ready to kick some serious butt.

The casino scenes will remind you of watching a high stakes poker tournament on ESPN. They kind of drag along and take away from the pace of the action. That was the only real flaw in the movie and it was a minor one. This is a movie that will provide worthy entertainment for the price of your ticket.

On a side note. We had the pleasure of watching the movie with one of the best Bond villains. Richard Keil, "Jaws", was in the theater with us while we were watching the movie. He is even bigger in real life than he is on the silver screen. That brought back a lot of memories seeing him in the auditorium with us. My kids got a real thrill out of seeing a movie star in the theater with us.

Borat: Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan review

Posted : 17 years, 5 months ago on 16 November 2006 05:51 (A review of Borat: Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan)

This movie had some very funny moments and was good for a few laughs. I wouldn't recommend this movie as a must see. I got in for free and thats about what I would pay to see it. I would wait for cable to see this one. If you have seen the trailers for the movie, you have seen pieces of all the funny bits in the movie. The only scenes you have missed are the ones with nudity. And gentleman were not talking about beautiful women showing off their wares. If you like seeing men's behinds, you'll like the nude scenes which were pretty funny. If you are sensitive to religious parodies, I wouldn't watch this film.
