Another Cronenberg gem

Posted : 16 years, 7 months ago on 30 September 2007 12:59 (A review of Eastern Promises)

I really liked his last movie "A History of Violence" and was looking forward to this movie especially when Mortenson signed on again to lead. I wasn't disappointed and had a really great night out. (It was a pretty good birthday present to myself.)

One of the reasons I wanted to watch it was because of an article I read about the tatoos that were on the characters. Apparently in the Russian mafia your life history is inked into your body. Reading that article made a connection to the characters that I wouldn't have had and an understanding of the importance of the tatoos that Mortenson gets in the movie.

The twist in the movie wasn't really that much of surprise if you are paying attention. It doesn't take away from the excellent acting and a very good story. I love watching movies that are driven by a story and not a huge special effects budget. If you love this kind of a movie, you don't want to miss Eastern Promises.

silly

Posted : 16 years, 7 months ago on 29 September 2007 08:41 (A review of Mr. Bean's Holiday)

If you are a fan of Mr. Bean, you will enjoy this movie. I took my son and he had a blast. (He is a fan of Mr. Bean.) The movie is very silly and has some very funny moments. If you don't like British humor, you might want to skip this one. The movie follows that misadventures of Bean as he goes on vacation in France. Needless to say nothing goes according to plan and everything falls apart for his vacation.

Wait for cable

Posted : 16 years, 7 months ago on 16 September 2007 08:51 (A review of Death Sentence)

This movie was very predictable and not very realistic. It is a "wantabe" Death Wish. It tries but doesn't really come that close to the one that started it all. Kevin Bacon's character is a nice guy that tries to turn evil with revenge. I didn't think he pulled the change off very well. The character didn't really fit the part very well. One bright spot in the movie was John Goodman. His character was fun to watch. Too bad he only had three short scenes in the movie.
This is one that would be better off to wait and watch when it comes out on cable.

Goldie shines

Posted : 16 years, 8 months ago on 31 August 2007 08:07 (A review of The Sugarland Express)

This was one of Spielberg's early films and was fun to watch. Goldie Hawn was funny and at her best in the role as a mother trying to get back the child that was taken from her while she was in jail. She highjacks her husband from prison and they go on a funny road trip in a police car to try to get him back. Ben Johnson was great as the leading officer in the chase to capture them.

I saw this one on cable TV, but it would be worth the price of a rental. If nothing else, you'll get a kick out of the older cars and very cheap gas prices. Have fun with this one.

oops

Posted : 16 years, 8 months ago on 31 August 2007 07:58 (A review of The Last Legion)

This is one movie you can wait for cable. Don't waste money on renting it. It was a "B" movie wanting to be an "A" movie.

Great family movie

Posted : 16 years, 8 months ago on 26 August 2007 09:16 (A review of Stardust)

This movie was a lot of fun to watch. It had a great cast that worked really well together. Robert DeNiro was hilarous in his scenes. The movie moved from action to comedy really well. (My son didn't want to see this with his sisters, but at the end he even said it was really funny.)

If you haven't heard about this movie, it is a romantic fantasy. A young man goes on a quest to win the heart of the women he loves. Of course along the way he meets up with a lot of adventures and challenges that he must overcome.

A lot of reviews have compared this with the Princess Bride. There are comparisons but this movie uses the modern special effects really well to add to its excitement. (ie. The ghostly brothers and use of magic.) I don't know why this movie hasn't attracted more of an audience. It really is worth seeing with the whole family.

Good bye Harry

Posted : 16 years, 8 months ago on 26 August 2007 08:59 (A review of Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets (Harry Potter, Book 2))

Wow, this was a wonderful ending to a long journey. This was one of the best endings to a book series that I have had the pleasure to read. The suspense and action kept going right up to the very end. Some of our friends didn't make it to the end, but most did. I guess all I can say is that we will miss you Harry.

another sequel

Posted : 16 years, 10 months ago on 13 June 2007 10:03 (A review of Ocean's Thirteen)

Most of the time when you get to a third installment of sequels you don't get much for your money. I did't feel that way with this movie. I knew going into it that there would be a lot of suspense, twists and turns in the plot, and something would be stolen. There was and it was a lot of fun watching the story unfold. This ensemble cast is a great one to watch and they really work well with each other. This is one that the whole family would enjoy watching. If you liked the first two, you won't be disappointed with this one.

Fun movie

Posted : 16 years, 10 months ago on 13 June 2007 09:57 (A review of Wild Hogs)

This is a movie that isn't going to be in the running for any major awards this year. Now after saying that I have to say I did have a lot of fun watching this movie. I took my kids to it and we laughed through the whole movie. We had a really good time. The comedy is a lot of goofy slapstick, but the guys pull it off real well. This is one that the whole family will enjoy.

Wait for cable

Posted : 16 years, 10 months ago on 13 June 2007 09:50 (A review of Bug )

The critics gave this one pretty good reviews and I thought I would try it out. Ouch, I could have missed this one and been better off. I rarely want to leave in the middle of a movie, but I did in this one. The longer the movie went the more absurd it became. If you want to watch a couple of really mentally unstable people fall further and further out of touch with reality, watch this movie. This was not a happy movie, it was pretty depressing to watch and I wondered why I spent money to watch it. Wait unitl it comes out on cable and you don't have anything better to do for the night.
