You'll leave with a smile

Posted : 16 years, 10 months ago on 13 June 2007 09:43 (A review of Knocked Up (2007))

This movie was a pleasant surprise. I wasn't too sure about it from the previews, but it turned out to be a very funny movie. I laughed and had a great time watching this one. The laughs start at the beginning of the movie and don't end until the end.

This one is an adult comedy and isn't one to bring the kids to watch with you. There are a lot of jokes and material that younger kids will not understand. Leave them at home and take your date out for a fun time. Be prepared for a belly ache at the end of this one. :)~

Very good sequel

Posted : 16 years, 11 months ago on 3 June 2007 09:56 (A review of The Ghost Brigades (A Sci Fi Essential Book))

This is a very good sequel to Old Man's War. This story follows John Perry's Jane and the ghost brigade. The ghost brigade are a group of hybrid soldiers that are manufactured to kick some serious butt.

The story actually follows the clone of a rogue scientist that is trying to help alien forces defeat and destroy Earth's space colonies. The scientists hope that the clone will give them clues as to what the scientist is trying to do to defeat the colonies. The story gets interesting as the clone develops his own personality and own opinions. There are some great battle scenes in the story as well.

This is a very good book. I would highly reccomend reading Old Man's War before you read this story. It will give you more background on the colonies and ghost brigade that Scalzi has created.

Fanstastic story

Posted : 16 years, 11 months ago on 3 June 2007 09:48 (A review of Old Man's War)

This is a wonderful story. Even if you don't like science fiction, this story will grab you and take you for a ride you won't soon forget. It has very innovative ideas and is very fresh.

The story follows John Perry as he reaches his 75th birthday. He joins up with the colonial forces that are protecting Earth's colonies out in the universe. But for the life of him, John can't figure out why they would want old men and women to be fighting for the colonies. Well once he leaves Earth he finds out the answer to this question and his adventure begins.

I really enjoyed the storytelling by Scalzi. He created a character and world that are very compelling. You want to find out what is going to happen around every turn and there are a lot of turns. You want to read something new and fresh, pick up this book and let the fun begin.

Wow

Posted : 17 years, 1 month ago on 12 March 2007 02:05 (A review of 300)

This was a stunning visual movie. The blending of special effects CGI with live action was seamless. The muted color scheme really added to the feel of the movie.

The 300 Spartans chosen to go against the thousands of invading soldiers look intimidating. They looked ready to kick some serious butt and did in the movie. The battle tactics were amazing and very realistic. Someone obviously did their homework before making the movie. Gerard Butler was the perfect leader of the Spartans. He makes you want to join in and help fight.

The battle scenes are very intense and bloody. I saw some little children in the theater when I went and didn't really like it. This is not a family film and younger kids should stay at home. There are a couple of sex scenes that don't leave much to your imagination also.

If you like well told and visually explicit action movies, you don't want to miss this one. Once you jump on the ride, you won't want to get off until it ends. Enjoy!

You gotta love the Blues

Posted : 17 years, 1 month ago on 9 March 2007 04:09 (A review of Black Snake Moan)

I really enjoyed this movie. I have always been a fan of Christina Ricci and Samuel Jackson and they give strong performances in this movie. Christina barely wears any clothes throughout the movie and sometimes this takes away from her acting. Samuel Jackson does a great job as her guardian saint. He even sings a couple of tunes and really pulls it off. The soundtrack that follows the movie is full of great blues and is perfect for the movie.

There is some strong language, sex, drug use, and nudity in the movie. If this offends you, I wouldn't go see this one. If you don't mind taking a walk on the wild side, you will probably enjoy the movie like I did. You don't see the cute little Christina in this movie that you saw in Casper or the Addams Family. This movie is hardcore and rough.

Pretty good adaptation

Posted : 17 years, 1 month ago on 5 March 2007 03:34 (A review of Bridge to Terabithia)

This movie surprised me. It isn't like the previews and I didn't think I would like it because of the previews. I read the book and I didn't remember all the fantasy scenes driving the story like they were showing in the previews. Luckily when I went and saw the movie they didn't really make the film this way. It actually followed the book pretty closely.

The movie follows the friendship that develops between the characters and the fantasy world that they create really well. They covered the ending in a way that will require you to need some tissue. It was tastefully done and very emotional. Younger children may not really be ready for this one. You should be ready to talk about the movie with your children when it ends.

If you've read the book and want to see the movie, I think that you will enjoy your experience. If you haven't read the book, you will be in for a well told story. It is full of smiles and sorrow. Have fun.

Fun movie

Posted : 17 years, 1 month ago on 5 March 2007 03:23 (A review of Ghost Rider)

This is a movie to watch if you just want to escape and have fun for an afternoon. The movie doesn't get into a deeply involved storyline and moves at a pretty quick pace. I took my kids and they loved the movie. It does have scary images in a couple of scenes and may not be good for younger children.

The action scenes were well done and the CGI is pretty decent to watch. Cage does well by the main character. Eva played off of him really well also. The sound track kicked some serious butt and really added to the feel and pace of the movie.

If you're looking for a fun action film, this one should be worth the price of admission.

Ouch

Posted : 17 years, 2 months ago on 12 February 2007 11:18 (A review of Epic Movie)

This was a movie that was hard to watch. It had its funny moments, but there isn't much substance to it. If you go to the movies a lot, you will see a lot of recent movies played upon by the writers. It was kind of fun to see all the cameos and to see how many of the different films they attacked I had seen. Other than that, I wouldn't reccomend seeing this movie unless you really want to go out and watch some brainless humor.

decent horror film

Posted : 17 years, 2 months ago on 9 February 2007 08:13 (A review of The Messengers)

I went into this movie not expecting too much and that was a good thing. The movie is a pretty good jump movie. (One that has scenes that sneek up on you and make you jump in your seat.) My daughter went with me (13 years old) and she held onto my arm through a lot of the movie. She thought it was pretty scary.

The story is pretty predictable and doesn't have a lot of depth, but that is OK because we went to get scared. The scary scenes are put together pretty well. They are dark, creepy, and the sound effects make your skin crawl.

The basic idea in the story is that this family moves to a farm to start a new life growing sunflowers. The family before them disappears without a trace and they get the property cheap. The family really had died and is now haunting the home. The little brother sees the ghosts and isn't afraid of them. The sister clues into the fact that something weird is going on soon after the brother. Everyone else is pretty clueless for most of the movie.

Don't go to this one if you don't like horror movies. It isn't the best story out their, but it had good scary scenes that were fun to watch. I still have the marks on my arm from my daughter to prove it.

Lots of blood

Posted : 17 years, 3 months ago on 28 January 2007 08:43 (A review of Smokin' Aces)

I went to this one expecting and wanting to watch a high octane testosterone movie. I wasn't let down. The body count is high and the blood flows freely in this one. I saw it at the matinee time and that is about what it is worth.

If you've seen the trailer for this one, you know what to expect. A group of hitmen are after one target for a big cash prize. They all compete to get there first and will do anything to get there along the way. Don't expect a deep thinking movie with this one. It is an "A" ticket ride with a lot of action.

I would've rated this one a little higher except the ending sucked. You go along for the ride and when the action ends they keep the story going. I was sitting there thinking about what they were going to do next, the movie is over. Well personally I think what they did next wasn't worthy of the rest of the movie. If you watch it, you'll have to see if you agree.
